There is another 'Nass sockeye' gillnet and seine opening today. It's interesting in reading the differering requirements as described in the Fishery Notices copied below. Seiners have to release everything but sockeye and pinks. The gillnetters are on non-retention for coho and steelhead but are only 'requested' to release chinook and chum. I guess the differences in regs. are related to the methodology: seiners have the ability to fish more selectively than do gillnetters, so release rules are in place for them. Gillnetters used in the regular fashion have much less ability to fish selectively, so in order to even allow them to fish....the rules must be different...therefore they are allowed the option to keep fish dead at the boat.
Now, if you look at the last Nass sockeye opening on July 7th, 174 gillnetters caught 4302 supposedly 'Nass' sockeye.....but also kept 4818 chum. They actually caught and kept more of the 'requested release' species than the species they were targetting! Makes you wonder how many fishers complied with the 'request release'....Now, you would think this should be of concern yet here we are today with another opening and we'll probably see similar results. And north coast chum, dont forget, are a species of concern with 'no directed fisheries' allowed"
Fishery Notices:
For seines: "This is a Nass sockeye and pink directed fishery. Chinook, chum, coho, and steelhead mandatory release. Extensions will be based on the ratio of target species to chum."
For gillnets: "The target species in Area 3 is Nass Sockeye. Gill net fisheries are being conducted with non-retention non-possession of coho & steelhead. There are a number of weak chinook and chum stock in Area 3 that are currently in the rebuilding phase. Fishers are requested to release all live chinook and chum to the water with the least possible harm."
