Ranking supermarkets on seafood sustainibility

Since we were just discussing sustainable fisheries in our last post, check out this latest ranking of our supermarkets by Greenpeace http://www.greenpeace.org/canada/en/recent/supermarkets-ranking

Our west coast supermarkets dont fare too well do they?? This is bad news, especially given the fact Jim Pattison owns both Overwaitea and the Canadian Fishing Company. CanFisCo is a large processor with a fleet of their own fishing boats. It stands to reason if the supermarket division doesnt care about selling sustainably caught products then the fish catching division probably doesnt have high standards either.

Wouldnt it be great if such high profile BC 'boosters' as Jimmy Pattison actually cared enough about our salmon resource to treat it with some respect? Being the only vertically integrated company in the salmon business in BC, Jim Pattison Group has a unique opportunity to deliver on sustainable fish products as they can control from catch to market shelf. Let's see some 'leadership' on this issue from one of BC's biggest companies.

Maybe think about this next time you are in an Overwaitea store ( or other Overwaitea Food Group stores: Save-On-Foods, PriceSmart, Urban Fare, Bulkley Valley Wholesale) looking at fish....
