Bulkley River Sonic Tagging program info

Message from Ministry of Environment, Smithers regarding Bulkley river steelhead being tagged.

We started applying sonic tags to steelhead in Moricetown Canyon last week. We intend to apply sonic tags to 66 steelhead over the next few weeks. The transmitters are attached to the base of the dorsal fin, black in colour, cylindrical and 25mm in length (see attached photo). All steelhead captured in the Moricetown Canyon will continue to receive a single anchor tag. If you encounter a steelhead with a sonic tag could you please provide me with information about the anchor tag number, general location of capture as well as fish and tag condition upon release. If you capture a steelhead with a anchor tag and no sonic tag could you please record the anchor tag number, general location of capture and forward me that information too. This will potentially help us evaluate sonic tag retention rates. Please do not attempt to remove or manipulate the transmitter. I can provide a spreadsheet with the relevant column headings to facilitate data collection in the field if you think it is a helpful tool. Please let me know if you would like me to do this and let me know if you have any questions.
