Skeena Chinook Opening

From the North Coast Salmon Update #1:
Chinook Gill Net Fishery:
Fishery opened for 30 hrs Jun 20-21. 64 gill nets were present. The preliminary hail was
850 Chinook. 14 steelhead released. Fishing conditions were good with not a lot of
debris observed in the water. Sockeye were observed jumping through the slough and
river.

Tyee Test Fishery Index: (to June 20)
..................2011..........2000's Average........'90's Average
Chinook:   26.87..............71.91......................63.41

In 2010, 135 gillnetters caught only 746 Skeena chinook during this opening. This number was mentioned as the lowest ever catch for this fishery. At the time of this low chinook catch in 2010, the Tyee Chinook Index was 40.53.
This year the Tyee Chinook Index is lower at only 26.87 and it begs the question will DFO allow another opening?  All indicators seem to point to the fact there shouldnt be any further openings on Skeena chinook.
Makes one wonder why there was an opening in the first place with such low Tyee numbers??
We shall see if DFO has figured out the 'precautionary approach'.

** Notice, 14 steelhead were reported caught in this opening. These were probably a mix of kelts and fresh fish. Again, we dont know whether they were released alive or dead....or whether 14 is even an accurate number. And so much for the size selective nature of large mesh chinook gillnets....they can and do catch just about everything that swims by.
