More Fishery Openings....

Just as we are posting about 'enough already' with the commercial fishing...DFO announces more. Here we have 2 more gillnet openings in Skeena and Nass.
The Skeena Notice states gillnet fleet compliance was good with the 'selective gillnetting' measures and that further openings are warranted.
What an absolute joke...Let's guess that a Fishery Officer or two checked maybe 3 or 4 gillnetters during yesterday's opening and extrapolated these results over the 200 or more boats participating. As if this reflects any kind of reality on the water!?

This is exactly how 2006 unfolded with opening after opening...just because Tyee sockeye numbers stayed strong. Steelhead and chum mean absolutely nothing to the North Coast office of DFO. It appears keeping the commercial lobbyists content and off their backs is the primary motivator...Same old, same old...once a few fish show up DFO is full extraction mode.

Good compliance with selective measures has resulted in continued openings and
increased areas for the gill net fleet.  Continued effort to follow selective
rules is needed.
