With the Area 3 Nass sockeye fishery set to shut down tomorrow to take harvest pressure off depressed Kwinageese sockeye. The commercial fishing focus will inevitably shift to Area 4 Skeena
The Daily sockeye numbers have rebounded the last couple days after a lacklustre start. It is these kinds of 'bumps' of fish that have in the past emboldened fishery managers to roll the dice and allow commercial openings in the hope that the strong numbers will keep going. With Area 3 closed now look for announcements of openings in Skeena. DFO has already stated the planned first opening date for Skeena gillnet openings as July 12th. With the sockeye numbers uncertain we shall see how 'risk averse' and 'precautionary' DFO are this week.
