North Coast Salmon Update – Tuesday, Jul 13, 2010
Please note that in-season updates always deal in preliminary numbers. Usually these change somewhat upon receipt and analysis of all the data.

From Nisga’a Lisims Government – Fish and Wildlife Department:

Using the 94-09 mean run timing to GW fishwheels (41%), in-season net escapement (~89,000) and total Canadian catch (~88,000) estimates to 12 July, the TRTC estimate for Nass sockeye is ~460,000 (Min/Max ranges: 330,000, 716,000).

Using the 94-09 mean run timing to GW fishwheels (90%), in-season net escapement (~7,100 – coastal and in-river estimate) and total Canadian catch (~6,800) estimates to 12 July, the TRTC estimate for Nass Chinook is ~16,000.

No coho salmon have been caught at the Nass fishwheels to date. Coho typically begin to be caught at the fishwheels in mid-July.

Total catch of pink salmon at the Nass fishwheels to date is 7 (about average).

Total catch of chum salmon at the Nass fishwheels to date is 2 (average).

Total catch of steelhead at the Nass fishwheels to date is 16 (above average).

Alaska: Tree point catches are average for Chinook (~1200) and coho (~4100), below average for sockeye (~50,000) and pink (~60,000); and above average for chum (~65,000) to date.

Area 3 expected fishing pattern:

Area 3 is expected to remain closed next week (during the third week of July) to allow for non-Meziadin stocks to migrate through the fishing area, and to allow a large abundance of chum to leave the fishing area. Fishing opportunities will be assessed on an on-going basis.

Area 4
On Thursday, July 8, the estimated annual return to the Skeena was forecast to be about 1.6M. Normally, on Thursdays an announcement is made concerning fishing for the upcoming week, to enable the fishing fleet to prepare. However, the announcement for Area 4 was that we wanted to wait one more day for additional information before we made any decision.

On Friday, July 9, the estimated annual return to the Skeena was forecast to be about 1.5M. According to the Area 4 decision rules, this level of return would trigger a commercial fishery, as well as a recreational fishery for a possession limit of 2 in the Skeena River. A commercial gill net fishery was announced, and paperwork was initiated to open the recreational fishery.

Area 4 commercial fishery:

............Effort...... Sockeye...... Coho..... Pink..... Chum.... Chinook
Jul 12... 193......... 15382........... 0.......... 81........... 0.......... 233

Area 5
Jul 12.... 18.......... 1476.............. 0......... 216.......... 0........... 0

Comparison GN fleet counts in Area 4 (to the nearest date, when A3 is open):
2009....... 2008.............. 2007............. 2006..... ........2005...... 2004
N/A.. Jul 15 – 282....... Jul 16 – 389.. Jul 12 – 276 .N/A .......Jul 12- 440

On Wednesday, July 14, the Skeena River opens to recreational angling for a retention limit of 2 per day, 4 in possession.

Estimated annual Skeena sockeye return forecast on July 13 is 1.2M. This is just above the threshold of allowing a commercial fishery. Catch in Area 4, continued escapement, and other Skeena activity will all be watched closely in the coming days and weeks to determine whether any further management actions are warranted.

Tyee test indices:
(to July 13)......... 2010 index........ 2000s average.......... 90s average

Steelhead........... 4.52......................... 3.10......................... 4.85

Area 3/4 Chatham Sound and the Skeena River non-tidal Recreational Creel Surveys are both underway, and preliminary numbers will appear in future weekly updates.

Area 6
Douglas Channel (6-1) opened for gill nets July 12. 6 gill net vessels attended. Fishery was extended for a second day on July 13. Catches for the 6 vessels on the first day averaged about 100 chum, which is low in comparison with other years.

Area 8
Area 8 opened for gill net and seine on July 12. 40 gill nets and 3 seine vessels attended. Catches were very poor, and there were no extensions.

Area 10
Docee Fence:

Comparative sockeye and coho counts to July 11:
...................Sockeye............... Coho
2010 -.......... 7182.................. 119
2009 -......... 3149................... 23

North Coast Troll
From Dave Rekdal:
The total projected troll catch to July 8th suggests an approximate harvest of 46,728 Chinook (43.6%) against the established TAC of 107,100 Chinook.

From Ivan Winther:
A second DNA analysis was completed for 371 Chinook salmon caught from June 16 to 26 in Areas 1, 101 & 142. The samples were collected from 27 vessel landings. The main component in the catch was South Thompson at 55%, followed by North & Central Oregon at 13.4% and Upper Columbia Summer/Fall at 8.9%. WCVI was the fourth largest component at 3.9%. Skeena made up 2.7% of the sample, Northern Mainland 2.8% and Nass contributed 0.8%.

Using the projected troll catch of 46,728 Chinook to 8 July from the Weekly Troll Update and the average of the two samples to date the catch of WCVI Chinook is estimated at 1,425 (of a 2600 limit).

Management Actions:
Sockeye & chum are closed.
Regular coho fishery is scheduled to open July 22.
