With sockeye Index numbers again heading upwards over the last two days:
July 19: 113.98
July 20: 164.64
indicating LOTS of sockeye moving in.....The run estimate is now in the 3 million fish range ( from the forecast 1.2M) and this means green light for commercial openings this week. There is an opening today and probably several more this week can be expected....both seine and gillnet.
At the very least we would hope DFO shifts the gillnetters to the so called selective measure of 'short set/ short net' as soon as possible to lessen any impacts on steelhead. Last year this was implemented on July 19th....Basically, if DFO are going to allow gillnetting at all, we feel this measure should be in place all the time.
