Somewhat conceding that BC values Primary production over Tourism, Is there some reason they couldn't allow the seiners in earlier to fill their quota before the Big push of Steelhead enter? Perhaps having a mid to end of July seine season would reduce the impact on returning Steelhead.Very large numbers of Sockeye appeared, Via Tyee Test Fishery, around July 13 while Steelhead returns were still relatively low.
the age old problem is the peak runs of sockeye and steelhead overlap...Plus, concerns over early run Nanika wild sockeye preclude any fishing in early July. Seines do contribute to steelhead mortality but gillnetters much more so. And, overall our early returning steelhead have born the brunt of exploitation over the years and so need re-building...Early commercial fishing wouldnt assist in this.
