FLNRO Steelhead Update To Sept.09,2011
The Tyee Test Index to the September 8th is 130, 60% of last year’s index to the same date and above the all years’ average (average all years since 1956 = 101; range: 33 (1957) to 246 (1998)).
The Upper Sustut River Enumeration Weir was installed and began fishing on July 31st. Four hundred and twenty-three steelhead have been captured to date, greater than average and 89% of last year’s census to the same date (average all years since 1994 = 309; range: 61 (1999) to 708 (2004)).
As of August 24th, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans estimate the Skeena sockeye aggregate escapement past Tyee to be 1.48 million.
Commercial fishing activity in the Skeena River approach waters is complete for this season.. Commercial fishing activity to date can be found in the attached: Commercial Openings 2011.

Large Tyee Steelhead Index Daily figure August 25th: 12.46
The 12.46 Tyee Steelhead Index daily figure for August 25th really stands out. This is only 8th instance of double digit Daily Index for steelhead we can find. The other double digit Daily numbers occurred;
- August 16th, 2002, 11.72
-July 27 to July 30,1998 4 days in a row in double figures
-August 12th, 1988 11.07
-July 27, 1986, 10.08
So, just a handful of occurrences in over 50 years and none higher than this August 25th of 12.46. We'll keep checking to see if this really is the highest single day tally for steelhead at Tyee....Or it could be an transcription error from the boat operator to DFO....

New DFO Tyee Webpage
The regular DFO web page for information on the Tyee test Fishery has been updated. You can see a new link taking you to this page
On the new page, the top link Daily Tyee Test Fishery Summary Report is the one to use for all species information. The bottom link Daily Tyee Test Fishery Escapement Report is just sockeye escapement information.
And in checking just now we see an great Index number of 12.46 for steelhead for August 25th...that's nice.

MOE Skeena Update to Aug.24th,2011
Here is the latest Skeena Steelhead Update from the FLNRO Ministry (aka Ministry of Environment)
Please find, attached, the Skeena Update to August 24th, 2011. This file contains the Tyee Test Fishery generated Skeena River summer steelhead index to August 23rd, including daily, cumulative and escapement estimate figures, in addition to a summary table showing cumulative index data since 1998, overall and decadal averages, et cetera.
The Tyee Test Index to the August 23rd is 97, 56% of last year’s index to the same date and above the all years’ average (worst year: 1957 = 26; best year: 1998 = 220; average of all years since 1956 = 85).
The Moricetown (Bulkley-Morice) mark-recapture fishery began on July 27th, and was again facing high water related challenges this past week; water levels rose substantially on the 22nd making dipnet fishing difficult from river left. Between August 1 and August 18th, beach seine crews tagged 116 steelhead, 15% of the 776 steelhead tagged at the beach seine for the same time period last year. To date, 279 steelhead have been examined in the dip net fishery, seven of which were previously marked.

Tyee Sockeye numbers build again
It seems a bit late for a pulse of sockeye but again the Tyee sockeye index has risen the last few days:
July 29-70.76
July30-98.41
July31-99.60
Aug.1-73.58
Aug.2-73.64
You know this means the pressure will be on DFO Fishery Managers to open up Area 4 Skeena again to the commercial fishermen. Does DFO roll the dice? The overall Sockeye Index at 1508, equating to 995,280 sockeye some 54,720 short of the escapement/FSC requirement of 1,050,000. (Edit Aug.3: Well, of course DFO opened up for the gillnetters again...but at least made them use the short set/short net technique....How many more openings can we see....depends on sockeye numbers)
Given the way DFO has operated this year you would have to presume they will green light another opening for the gillnetters.
And since DFO North Coast doesnt think there is a steelhead conservation concern this year you can bet no selective measures will be implemented on the gillnetters...eventhough we will be into August.

Tyee Steelhead Daily Index to July 28
Here is a graph showing the Tyee Steelhead Daily Index numbers compared to the Decade Average. The large drop on the 19th is notable, as it follows a day with both seine and gillnet openings on the 18th. Wonder if there's any connection with that...??
